Swimming Pools
Overview
The swimming pools at West Wight Sports and Community Centre on the Isle of Wight provide high‑quality, accessible facilities for people of all ages and abilities. With both a Main Pool and a Learner Pool, we offer a wide range of swimming activities, lessons, fitness classes and specialist sessions for the local community and visiting families alike.
Whether you are learning to swim, training for fitness, taking part in aqua classes, enjoying family fun sessions or attending specialist training, our pools are designed to support safe, inclusive and enjoyable use throughout the year.
Main Pool
Our Main Pool is a 25‑metre by 13‑metre pool and is the deepest swimming pool on the Isle of Wight, reaching a depth of 3 metres. It is also the only pool on the Island with two diving boards, making it suitable for a wide variety of activities, including training, diving, and specialist sessions.
The shallow end starts at 1 metre deep and is fully accessible, with steps and a hoist capable of supporting wheelchair users. This ensures safe and inclusive access for swimmers with additional needs, rehabilitation requirements or reduced mobility.
The Main Pool is used for activities such as:
- Lane swimming and fitness swimming
- Adult and children’s swimming lessons
- Fun Hours and family swim sessions
- Lifeguard training and safety courses
- Sub‑Aqua and SCUBA pool sessions (delivered by external clubs)
- Canoeing and kayaking pool skills sessions
- Swim fitness and training sessions
Learner Pool
Our Learner Pool is ideal for young children, beginner swimmers and specialist sessions such as aqua mobility and rehabilitation‑style exercise.
- Depth: 0.8 metres throughout
- Size: 12 metres x 4.75 metres
Like the Main Pool, the Learner Pool is fully accessible, with steps and a hoist to support safe entry for those who need assistance. Water toys and floats are available to help younger children build confidence and develop early swimming skills in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Activities commonly held in the Learner Pool include:
- Baby and toddler swimming sessions
- Beginner children’s swimming lessons
- Adult beginner lessons
- Aqua Mobility classes

A Brief History of the Pools
The swimming pools at West Wight Sports and Community Centre were built by our own swimming club—an outstanding example of community commitment and collaboration. This achievement was recognised nationally when the project was awarded Community Project of the Year at the 2013 Amateur Swimming Association Awards.
You can learn more about the story behind the Centre and its pools by visiting our history page.
Each year, the Centre also organises the Solent Swim, a remarkable fundraising challenge where participants swim from the mainland to the Isle of Wight. This iconic event raises vital funds to support the charity that runs West Wight Sports and Community Centre, helping ensure our facilities remain accessible for generations to come.
