Rookie Lifeguards

Overview

Our Rookie Lifeguard Programme at West Wight Sports & Community Centre offers children aged 8–12 an exciting introduction to lifesaving skills, water safety and self‑rescue techniques. Based in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, this nationally recognised scheme teaches young people how to stay safe in the pool and the sea, helping them build confidence and competence in and around water.

The Rookie Lifeguard awards are delivered in progressive stages—Bronze, Silver and Gold—each divided into three levels. Children learn essential skills such as survival swimming, rescue techniques, safe entries, treading water, using rescue aids and responding to emergencies. Every stage typically runs for five to six weeks, with participants earning certificates and badges as they progress.

This programme also creates a pathway for children to become junior lifeguards and, in time, to advance their training further and potentially join our professional lifeguard team. It’s a fantastic opportunity for young people in the West Wight community to develop life‑saving skills while staying active and having fun.
