Our fantastic project will be run but Brian and children can come and learn how to sow and grow their own vegetables in the grounds of West Wight Sports and Community Centre.

This is for children aged 9-12 years and will run as a 5 week course on Wednesdays 17:00 – 18:00. The cost will be £15 per 5 session course. There will be two courses running simultaneously over a 10 week span, 5 sessions per course occurring fortnightly.

The course dates are:                         
Group 1: 24th April, 8th and 22nd May, 5th and 19th June 2024. 
Group 2: 1st, 15th and 29th May, 12th and 26th June 2024.

About The Sessions

Children will be learning from Brian, who grows his own vegetables at home, how to plant and nurture them until they are mature enough to harvest later in the year.

He will be teaching the “No Dig” method of gardening. As the name suggests, this doesn’t involve digging the ground which can interrupt the natural drainage created by insects and release carbon from the soil. Alternatively, weed suppressing cardboard will be laid on the ground first followed by compost kindly supplied from Skinners Farm.

We are very excited about offering this programme to young people. Educating them about the importance of healthy eating and promoting benefits of growing your own vegetables. There are both environmental and personal benefit, which include but are not limited to:

• A reduction in plastic
• It is more cost effective
• More nutritional value due to the food being in its freshest form when consumed
• Less carbon footprint because the food doesn’t need to be transported from far away
• A reduction in waste with any food scraps/peelings able to be used to make compost for the next years crop
• You can control if and which pesticides you choose to use on your produce

Voting has begun in store (our local Freshwater branch only) from now until the end of June 2024. To vote, you will need to make a purchase within store of any value. Then collect a blue token from the end of the checkout and drop it into your choice of local project!
